If you are one of the millions out of work, you may be willing to try about anything to find a job. All the recent articles online are telling us the same thing: you won’t find work by spamming your resume on CareerBuilder or Monster.com. Most companies get as many as 600 applicants for the same job. That’s a nightmare for human resources workers to wade through. Their departments understaffed and underfunded. They are not in pleasant working conditions right now. So skip irritating human resources departments with non-personalized cover letters and resumes. It’s a waste of time for you and for human resources departments. Get off the major job searching websites and take the unbeaten path.

What many laid off workers are not trying is at home careers. While I’m sure the idea has occurred too many out of work people, they just don’t know where to start or if an at home profession is really a viable option. At home work is a lot more viable than an unemployment check, so start taking the possibility seriously.

Start looking for work at home in unusual places. While oDesk, Elancer and Rentacoder are great for those who can make their budgets work with a wage of less than $2000 per month, most people can’t do that. Rent alone can eat up half that amount per month. Not to mention groceries, utilities, doctor visits, clothes and taxes. So what you are going to have to do is to find the very highest paying jobs on those websites, combine several different projects at once or look somewhere else for viable options.

If you want to combine several different opportunities at once, you will probably have the most success. Writing freelance for newspapers or magazines is a great way to make a supplementary income. Creating websites for companies is another very nice way to make extra money. Starting an eBay store is another possibility. If you have the ambition, get your insurance license and sell insurance from home. You can also take accounting courses and do the books for companies and taxes for individuals during tax time.

Right now is a good time to offer banks yard keeping services for homes that have been foreclosed on. Thanks to the huge amounts of empty homes, there are a lot of yards looking raggedy and bringing the value of entire neighborhoods down. Banks are sometimes so desperate for yard workers that they are paying their own employees to go mow lawns on the weekends. You can make a fulltime job out of taking care of empty homes. You would be responsible for reporting any needed repairs, keeping the property looking nice and well maintained and occasionally water yards or fixing things like broken fence planks. During the winter time you would need to go check the pipes in the homes and scoop sidewalks or rake leaves.

Another option to make a supplementary income is to take <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview(‘/outgoing/article_exit_link’);” href=”http://www.getpaidtotry.com/”>online surveys </a>. The <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview(‘/outgoing/article_exit_link’);” href=”http://www.getpaidtotry.com/”>best paid surveys </a> are those found through clearing houses like the one at http://www.getpaidtotry.com/.  You can also occasionally get paid to read emails at this website. Whatever jobs you can find help you get one step closer to being back in the game full time. Be creative and keep your head up.
